The WWPF's first championship game is in the books! This game pitted an unlikely 49ers team against a dominant Jaguars team. The Jaguars had rolled through the AFC playoffs until this point. They manhandled the Patriots 39-10 in the Divisional round, and then held off the Browns, 40-34 in the championship game. The Jags boasted the #2 defense in the league, allowing only 314 points all season long. Their offense was top ten in the league in scoring, and second overall in yardage. Amassing a staggering 7,133 yards. The Jags started the season 8-0 and never looked back. Finishing at 12-4 there was no doubt that they'd win the division.
The 49ers, on the other hand, had a tough divisional race all season long. It's arguable if they were even the best team in their division. In the end, they edged out the Arizona Cardinals by one game. They are a very well rounded team, the 4th best scoring offense in the league (487 points) and fifth best defensive team (345 points allowed). By the end of the season they had one of the top passing attacks in the league, despite being led by backup QB turned superstar Joshua McCloud. The 49ers path to the Super Bowl was not as easy as the Jaguars' was. They did handle the Vikings in the Wildcard Round by a score of 37-21, but they had to face one of if not the best team in the league in the divisional round, the Dallas Cowboys. They went on to win that game 29-27 holding off a late comeback attempt by the Cowboys.
The Super Bowl itself appeared to be a blow out at the end of the first half. San Francisco had a 24-3 lead going into the locker room. The Jaguars weren't done yet, however. They came out of the gate on fire. Scoring 10 unanswered points in the third quarter, capped by an 84 yard run by HB Jackie Corbitt. The fourth quarter looked to be much of the same, a quick touchdown and 2 point conversion brought the score to 24-21. The 49ers took hold of the ball with 11:36 left in the game, and didn't look back. They ran the ball 7 out of 11 plays in the drive. McCloud had 56 yards passing during that drive as well. Josh McCloud found WR B. Middleton in the endzone with 6:02 left. The score was now 31-21 and would stay that way. The ensuing three and out by the Jags sealed the deal.
